My favourite and not so favourite highlights!
Rihanna opened the show and performed 4 times, dropping medleys charting her entire career and literally brought the dancehall to the awards during one of them! She closed with an amazing performance of Stay, Diamonds and Love on the Brain.
Dress wise, Riri can rock a thigh high boot like no other! The only thing I could probably afford, if I don’t buy my September travel card next month is the Hood By Air Tee that she wore during her opening performance…it retails at $190. My personal favourite was the champagne gold coloured shirtdress with full skirt by French designer Alexandre Vauthier, which she wore when accepting The Michael Jackson Vanguard Award for her influence as an artist. Side note: Drakes speech and Rihanna’s dab during it was too, much! They’re so sweet together!
Ariana Grande I must admit the track Into You is a guilty pleasure of mine! I bought it and I’ve rocked out to it in my room enough to know all the words, but that’s it!
The only impressive element in this performance was the fact the Ariana was riding a fitness bike in stiletto heels whilst singing at the same time. Other than that it was pretty lacklustre, very pink and Nicki who features on the track appeared to be very un-bothered, like Meh.com lol
Kanye West & Teyana Taylor After another one of his epic speeches, Kanye debuted his newest video for the track Fade taken from The Life of Pablo album. It shows Teyana Taylor’s amazing post baby body and she looks amazing! The video also features her hubby Iman Shumpert and baby Junie at the very end. The video is giving me definite Flash Dance vibes, a lot of sweat -but sexy sweat, steam and a lot of caramel lol And of course it’s an exclusive to Tidal…
Ever dapper, Jidenna‘s A little Bit More performance was a fun and light just like the song, but I expected him to be on the main stage and not on a roof top in Madison Square Garden! The singer rocked Ankara on the red carpet and during his performance. There was also an element of Afrobeats dance style, all nods to his Nigerian-American roots.
The effervescent Beyonce was in formation way before she went on stage! She walked the red carpet with Blu Ivy -who looked adorable, wearing a drop-hem tutu dress and tiara- and some of the beautiful women featured in her Lemonade visual Album: Top Model Winnie Harlow and the mothers of Travon Martin, Eric Garner, Mike Brown and Oscar Grant to name but a few. She wore a stunning sequin dress by Italian designer Francesco Scognamiglio with extended feathered neckline which from above looks like wings, and is rumoured to have been wearing a cool $13 million worth of diamonds in jewellery! She ended up taking home 8 awards with Video Of The Year for Formation being one of them.
The artist remained true to her commitment to BLM by making a statement at the beginning of her performance. Surrounded by dancers,Pray You Catch Me starts and one by one they fall, and the spot lights on them that once were white turn to red. She is then saved from falling by a hooded black male. She then went on to perform Hold Up, Sorry, Don’t Hurt Yourself – which I lived for, I love it when Bey’s angry and swears lol – and ended in Formation. The Queen gave us 15 minutes of slayage! Check it out!
