PICK OF POC LONDON: FEBRUARY 2018

Goodbye January and congratulations to everyone for completing the first month of 2018! February can mean so many types of celebration, from Valentine’s passion to LGBT History month reflections. And of course another Feb highlight? BLACK PANTHER WILL BE IN THE CINEMA!

Here’s our roundup of London events this month that are POC centric, or feature POC acts to support…

9TH FEB – FEMME-ERECT – £6 – Dalston Superstore – A brand new night launched by femmes for femmes. Celebrating the whole femme spectrum across two floors of music, DJs, performances, art work and video art.

10TH FEB – WE CAME TO SWEAT – £7/£9 – Bernie Grants Arts Centre – A documentary screening of a piece dedicated to Starlite – Brooklyn’s oldest legendary black owned gay bar.

FEMMES OF COLOUR PRESENT QUEER CREATIONS III AFTERPARTY – £10 – Them Downstairs – A dance party space dedicated to femmes of colour, expect amazing DJs and live club performances.

We could almost write a whole article about what Black Panther events are happening. There is a themed party at The Ritzy, Letitia Wright will be appearing at Q&A at Genesis Cinema, The CIAD are holding a costume making workshop, and Black History Walks will be holding a screening with an superbly picked expert panel.

9TH FEB – QUEER LATINO – £6 – Deptford Cinema – As part of a Latin America/DCQ takeover, there will be a screening of ‘Body Electric’ – “an erotic tale of identity and sexuality as seen through the intense colour and vibrancy of São Paulo.”

14TH FEB – ARABIC POETRY OF LOVE & LUST – FREE – Queen Of Hoxton Rooftop – A one-night only excursion featuring a collaboration between art & poetry. Readings on the night wll follow poetry by Arab women spanning 5,000 years, with art and books on sale with profits split, between artists & charity.

15TH FEB – BANTS CABARET – £6 – Her Upstairs – Centering the voices & creativity of trans and non-binary performers, this cabaret happens every 3rd Thursday of the month!

To begin a month of reflection, celebration and appreciation, Hackney Museum is starting the month launching not one, but TWO exhibitions at LGBT HIstory Month Launch event. Down in South London, the Shortwave Cafe presents Queer Arts Weekender, where queer performers, visuals artists and musicians present performance, poetry, fashion, music and much more. Lastly how can we not mention the highly anticipated Duckie Family Legacy, a not-be-missed performance, workshop, party extravaganza, aiming to explore “the roots of Queer People of Colour and the legacy they have left and continue to leave, behind.”

17TH FEB – SHD PRESENTS THE LATE SESSIONS – FREE – Upstairs At The Ritzy – A night for those who come for good music with a happy vibe. Get ready to smile and dance to funk, disco, Afrobeats & house.

22ND FEB – THE COCOA BUTTER CLUB – £5 – Her Upstairs – Showcasing and celebrating people of colour, quench your Thirsty Thursday Thirst with delicious POC excellence.

23RD FEB – BLACK BEAUTY AND FASHION AWARDS – £42.75 – Porchester Hall – Already being called the “Oscars of Black Beauty and Fashion”, this will be the UK’s first industry awards for black beauty products!
